Hersham: Ian Allan, 2005. The East Kent Road Car Co Ltd, one of the most important subsidiaries of BET, was formed in 1916 to bring together a number of earlier operators in the region. Based in Canterbury, the company's services covered a wide area of Kent bounded on the sea on three sides and by fellow BET company Maidstone & District to the west. The company's areas of operation included the Channel ports of Dover and Folkestone and this encouraged the company to pioneer continental coach tours - as early as 1919 - and the company also became heavily involved in contract work on behalf of airline and ferry companies, and the Europabus service network. In addition to these local, contract and international services, the company also ran express services from Kent into London. In terms of vehicles, the company's fleet was heavily biased towards Dennis and Leyland although after World War 2, it shifted towards Guy and AEC. Like other bus subsidiaries of BET, East Kent became part of the newly-created National Bus Company in the late 1960s. Following on from their earlier highly-successful books - on Southdown and Brighton - Glyn Kraemer-Johnson and John Bishop now turn their attention to East Kent. As with earlier volumes in the 'Glory Days' series, the book provides the reader with a detailed narrative of the company's history, fleet and operations from the earliest days through to the early 1970s when the company's individual identity was subsumed within the corporate identity of the NBC. Alongside the authors' well-researched text, the book includes c50 colour and c75 mono illustrations portraying the great variety of East Kent vehicles and services over the years. The 'Glory Days' series on individual bus operators has proved to be a success both amongst transport historians and locals; this new addition to the series is certain to further enhance the reputation of the authors as commentators on the subject and be eagerly read by all those who knew East Kent in the period or who are interested in the history of the area.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Picture Boards. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall., Ian Allan, 2005, 5<
