L'exposition inaugurale du MOCO sera consacrée à la présentation inédite d'une sélection d'oeuvres majeures issues de la collection Ishikawa, initiée en 2011 par l'entrepreneur japonais Yasuharu Ishikawa. Le commissariat est confié à Yuko Hasegawa, directrice artistique du Musée d'Art contemporain de Tokyo (MOT) et professeur à l'université des arts de Tokyo. Considérée comme l'une des figures les plus influentes du monde de l'art contemporain asiatique, elle a récemment été commissaire de la 7e Biennale internationale d'art contemporain de Moscou : Nuages - Forêts (septembre 2017), et présenté les expositions Japonorama au Centre Pompidou Metz (octobre 2017) et Fukami à l'Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild à Paris (août 2018). Avec près de 50 oeuvres muséales (sculptures, vidéos, installations, photographies) d'environ 20 artistes internationaux tels que On Kawara (Kariya, Japon, 1932 - New York, Etats-Unis, 2014), Felix Gonzalez Torres (1957, Guáimaro, Cuba - 1996, Miami, USA), Pierre Huyghe (1962, Paris, France), Danh Vo (Bà Ria, Vietnam, 1975), Tino Sehgal (Grande Bretagne, 1976), Motoyuki Shitamichi (1978, Okayama, Japon) ou Simon Fujiwara (Londres, Grande Bretagne 1982), l'exposition dessinera la trajectoire personnelle de son initiateur à travers l'art de ces vingt dernières années, et abordera la relation du spectateur à l'oeuvre d'art. L'exposition rassemble des oeuvres majeures de notre époque.
