Chronic wasting disease is related to a group of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies which includes such diseases as scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) in cattle, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. These are diseases of the nervous system that result in distinctive lesions in the brain. Little is known about this disease, but it is not known to infect humans or livestock at the present time.
