Dell. 2005. Paperback. Very Good. A tight clean softcover, no markings throughout: An ivy league murder, a mysterious coded manuscript, and the secrets of a R enaissance prince collide memorably in The Rule of Four-a brilliant work of fiction that weaves together suspense and scholarship, high art and unimag inable treachery. It's Easter at Princeton. Seniors are scrambling to finish their theses. An d two students, Tom Sullivan and Paul Harris, are a hair's breadth from sol ving the mysteries of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili-a renowned text attribu ted to an Italian nobleman, a work that has baffled scholars since its publ ication in 1499. For Tom, their research has been a link to his family's pa st-and an obstacle to the woman he loves. For Paul, it has become an obsess ion, the very reason for living. But as their deadline looms, research has stalled-until a long- lost diary surfaces with a vital clue. And when a fell ow researcher is murdered just hours later, Tom and Paul realize that they are not the first to glimpse the Hypnerotomachia 's secrets. Suddenly the stakes are raised, and as the two friends sift through the cod es and riddles at the heart of the text, they are beginnning to see the man uscript in a new light-not simply as a story of faith, eroticism and pedant ry, but as a bizarre, coded mathematical maze. And as they come closer and closer to deciphering the final puzzle of a book that has shattered careers , friendships and families, they know that their own lives are in mortal da nger. Because at least one person has been killed for knowing too much. And they know even more. [EAN: 9780671662424], Fine, [PU: Simon & Schuster, Riverside, New Jersey, U.S.A.], Soft cover. Fine condition.Illustrated. In this affectionate memoir of her good friend Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), the late Pollitzer, who played a leading role in the Women's Movement, weaves together letters, her own and others' reminiscences, as well as perceptive writings by a number of critics to illuminate the oeuvre of one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Pollitzer and O'Keeffe met in 1914 in an art class, and it was Pollitzer who introduced O'Keeffe's drawings to photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, thus sparking a legendary and dynamic collaboration. In her charming look at O'Keeffe's girlhood on a Wisconsin farm and in Williamsburg, Va., Pollitzer draws on the memories of neighbors and friends to create a portrait of a young woman who was independent, quietly confident, hardworking and brave. From O'Keeffe's first exhibit at Stieglitz's gallery in 1916 to the 1950s, when the memoir ends, Pollitzer focuses primarily on O'Keeffe's arther smaller nature studies, her signature giant flowers and the work inspired by her beloved New Mexico desert. The reader might wish Pollitzer would have delved into the personal morethe relationship between O'Keeffe and Stieglitz calls out for greater comment. But instead, the author gathers discerning, eye-opening statements on O'Keeffe's art from critics, artists like Stieglitz and Charles Demuth, and from O'Keeffe herself, whose correspondence, comments and exhibit introductions eloquently and movingly express the awesome love of life and the natural world that inspired her art. Size: 8vo - over 7 in to 9 in Tall
