The ability of China's entrepreneurs to establish firms in the midst of a strangling bureaucratic system is a topic which demands attention not least because it forms the basis of China's economic development. This book presents a fresh analysis for understanding the behavior of Chinese entrepreneurs and what kind of relations they have with local government in order secure long-term business success. Using theoretical approaches informed by neo-institutionalism, institutional economics and cultural studies and a database drawn from extensive fieldwork, the book explores how far these approaches fit the Chinese reality on a micro-level and analyzes whether Chinese business behavior follows the economic rationale or needs to be explained by its culture and institutions. The overall picture which emerges is that social capital at a local level is the most crucial factor explaining the emergence of private firms in China. While local governments and private entrepreneurs co-operate in order to establish and manager firms, domestic and international competition limits rent seeking and ensures the expansion of functioning markets. The contributors also suggest that behavior based on cultural norms and behavior based on rational decision making are not mutually exclusive in Chinese business relations. By utilizing a wide variety of perspectives this book analyzes Chinese entrepreneurship by linking theoretical arguments with data collected in open and structured interviews, the result of which is an invaluable resource for students of Chinese business and management as well as those studying the Chinese economy.
