Lowery, an expert on the early Spanish Possessions within the United States, formed a distinguished collection of maps relating to them and left this to the Library of Congress, together with the manuscript of this volume, here edited by the LoC's Head of Maps and Charts. Lowery's monograph contains descriptions of 750 maps, of which 306 were in his own collection of maps, a further 206 were in the map division of the Library of Congress and 184 did not appear in either at the time of publication. Many of the entries are annotated to reflect Lowery's researches and a large proportion are extensively further annotated by Phillips, so that this catalogue remains a most important reference. Coverage is not limited to the scope indicated by the book's title, as the preface notes: " the most important maps relating to the world, America, Mexico, and the separate provinces of Sonora and Lower California are described, as they more or less touch upon the main subject". With indexes of authors or cartographers, map titles and a general index. The Catalogue, now in five volumes, constitutes an essential bibliographical tool and is the key reference for early economic literature. It includes all works of economic literature in the University Library, covering the period from 1470 to 1850. The entries in volumes I, II and V are arranged chronologically under the year of publication, and from 1601 onwards this year-by-year arrangement is supplemented by 14 subject divisions: general, agriculture, corn laws, population, trades and manufactures, commerce, colonies, finance, transport, social conditions, slavery politics, socialism, miscellaneous. This combined chronological and subject arrangement, together with the exhaustive index in Volume IV makes the Catalogue a primary reference source for historians and economists concerned with the economic history of Great Britain, Europe, North America and Britain's colonial empire. ...Volume V [the first supplement to the Catalogue since 1982], which has its own index and covers additions since the publication of Volume III, follows the University Library's collaboration with Harvard's Kress Library which produced an integrated microfilm of the catalogues of both collections, and the acquisitions made have been restricted essentially to unique new holdings for the Goldsmiths' Library.
