1995, ISBN: 9780810935136

ID: 973005932

ABRAMS, September 1995. Hardcover. Used - Very Good. Lee Krasner (1908 - 1984) is one of the few women artists ever to be the subject of a catalogue raisonne. The achievement documented in this long-awaited study spans over 50 years: the Depression and WPA era, the World War II period, during which an influx of European emigre artists changed American art forever, the start of Krasner's liaison with Jackson Pollock, the development of Abstract Expressionism, the rise, decline, and death of Pollock, and Krasner's emergence as a full-fledged artist on her own. During these eventful years, Krasner produced more than 600 works in oil, mosaic, collage, and on paper. Every known example is listed here, with its exhibition history, references, provenance, and title changes. All examples discussed are illustrated, except for a handful that are lost. Illustrations appear alongside the picture entries. Transmutations of works are also tracked -- an indispensable task of detection in Krasner's case, since she sometimes cannibalized both her work and Pollack's to create new compositions. As a result of this kind of study, Ellen G. Landau has identified recycled works and rescued several from oblivion. In addition to providing the essential facts concerning each work, Landau has written interpretive essays analyzing major groups of works and their relationships to Krasner's life and oeuvre. An extensive illustrated Chronology, prepared by Jeffrey D. Grove, furnishes much new material on Krasner's family, her schooling with Hans Hofmann and other masters, and links with influential critics such as Harold Rosenberg. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks., ABRAMS
