From the catalogue introduction: "This part of the library of Christ's College, formerly the Free Church College, is basically the result of two nineteenth century benefactions. Many of the books bear the engraved bookplate of Alexander Thomson of Banchory, and many the label of the Lindsay-Brown Library, often with the ownership inscription 'Jo: Brown' on the titlepage. Alexander Thomson (1795-1868), was intimately connected with Aberdeen; the son of Andrew Thomson, his maternal grandfather was Professor of Mathematics at Marischal College, and he himself was educated there, before proceeding to study law in Edinburgh. Except for some periods of travel, he lived all his life at Banchory; always an avid reader, he bought books while on his travels in Europe, and in his diary described his visits to libraries. [When] speaking of the codex of the Pandects in Florence, he says 'printed at Florence 1553, 3 vols. Folio. I have a very good copy of this edition (lot 502)'. Very interested in social questions, he served on the Prison Board of Aberdeen from 1840-62, he published Punishment and Prevention, 1857, and Social Evils; their causes and their cure, 1852 [for the MSS. Of these works see lots 918A and 919]. He also published several papers on antiquarian subjects and bequeathed his museum with his library to the College.
