Ingrid Bergmann
Ingrid Bergmann considered herself a simple woman who loved to act. But to her audience and to those around her, she was an enigma, a mass of contradictions: a natural beauty who believed she was an ugly duckling, a star who shone brightest when playing the characters closest to herself but who always longed to escape the stereotype, a woman dominated always by her strict, almost puritanical, upbringing who nevertheless found herself a torchbearer for sexual liberation.
She achieved instant stardom in 1939 with her first Hollywood film, Intermezzo, then went on to starring roles in films that have passed into the realm of legend: Casablanca, Gaslight (for which she won her first Oscar), Notorious and For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Bergmann was denounced from the Floor of the U.S. Senate in 1950, but six years later Hollywood welcomed her back with open arms – and another Oscar. Ahead of her lay further triumphs on stage and television, and a return to her native Sweden to work with her famed countryman, director Ingmar Bergmann.
Internationally respected film critic John Russell Tayler writes with equal authority about Bergmann´s personal life, not only her scandalous involvement with and subsequent marriage to Roberto Rossellini, but the little-known love affairs which preceded it.
And he writes with compassion of her valiant struggle against the cancer which eventually caused her death-though not before she had given a last, memorable performance as “A Woman Called Golda”.
Her life was, to an extraordinary degree, open book. And yet the mystery remains: who was this woman who puzzled Hollywood with her lack of artifice, and what is the magic that still surrounds Casablanca for generations who were not yet born when it first appeared on the screen?
This lavishly designed, oversized book features a stunning a stunning collection of black and white and color photographs. It is a fitting tribute to one of Hollywood´s most beautiful and talented star.
