Everett Shinn (1876 - 1953) was an American realist painter and member of the Ashcan School, an artistic movement in the United States during the early twentieth century that is best known for works portraying scenes of daily life in New York. He also exhibited with the short-lived group known as "The Eight," who protested the restrictive exhibition policies of the powerful, conservative National Academy of Design. He is best known for his robust paintings of urban life in New York and London and for his theater and residential murals and interior-design projects. His style varied considerably over the years, from gritty and realistic to decorative and rococo. Edith DeShazo's biography reveals a mercurial personality, a man who was not only a painter but a decorator, playwright, and cinema art director, four times married, with a circle of fascinating and talented friends including Stanford White, William Randolph Hearst, and Rudolph Valentino. While decorating for Elsie DeWolfe and Stanford White, Shinn developed a style of painting, based on Boucher and Fragonard, often referred to as Rococo Revivalism. Supposedly, Shinn was the model upon which Theodore Dreiser based his novel "The Genius". Fascinated by the street life an night life of New York, Shinn depicted his surroundings with the realism of a reporter. His paintings, watercolors, and sketches reveal a journalist's curiosity and the ability to capture the life of a scene in one moment of spontaneous action.
