By the mid 1950s less than two per cent of the rail system in both counties had been converted to that motive source and was confined mainly to the Sydney and Melbourne urban areas unil the 1980s. In NZ electrification was confined to Wellington's city system and two long railway tunnels. Looking back to the earliest days of rail electrification the author cites a West Coast (NZ) coal mine company's electric powered locomotives used haul coal, and miners, on its 10km railway from 1908 to 1953, moving more than 1400 tonnes of coal a day. NZ's first major project was in the 1920s when the Midland Railway, crossing the Southern Alps, was electrified in a project requiring innovative engineering and power supply soutions. In Australia, although authorities debated electrification from the early 1900s. Melbourne was the first city to approve an urban electric rail system, but this project was delayed by the outbreak of WWI. Late in 1918 a two km section was used for trials and training with the initial services beginning in May 1919, with the inital project completed in 1923. While the early history of electrified rail is well described, the main focus of the author's study is on the subsequent widespread changes that occurred to railway services in both countries, with electrification adopted for both long- haul and urban traffic.The NZ section opens the book and follows projects commissioned from the 1920s to the 1990s in seven chapters, the last examining battey powered rail vehicles.The Australian section traverses roughly the same time sequence in 11 chapters, the final on light rail conversions. As well as the excellent text, which will satisfy both the technically minded and tha lay reader, the book has generous collection of illustrations. Colour and b/w photographs are found on almost every page and line-drawings of different types of locomotive models , each showing a profile drawing, plus a head-on views Vital statistics related to the subject accompany the drawings. This book would be a valued addition to any serious collection of railway history. A label attached to the lower edge of the front cover verso states this copy is number 482 of a limited edition of 750 copies and is signed by the author.
