Franz Kafka is one of the most important figures in twentieth-century culture. Die Geschichte handelt von Gregor Samsa, dessen plötzliche Verwandlung in ein Ungeziefer die Kommunikation seines sozialen Umfelds mit ihm immer mehr hemmt, bis er von seiner Familie für untragbar gehalten wird und schließlich zugrunde geht. Kafka gelang es in der Nacht vom 22. zum 23. September 1912, die Erzählung in nur acht Stunden in einem Zuge zu Papier zu bringen. Im späteren Urteil der Literaturwissenschaft hat Kafka hier mit einem Schlag thematisch und stilistisch zu sich selbst gefunden.
