FROM THE PUBLISHER - The senses - taste, hearing, and smell - dominate the lives of the characters in these witty, fantastical stories. In Under the Jaguar Sun a couple tours Mexico to discover a startling combination of sublime and erotic love in the cuisine of fire-hot chiles and exotic spices. In A King Listens the enthroned tyrant is prisoner not only of his power but also of his ear, as echoes in his huge palace carry contradictory messages of deliverance, love, and betrayal. In The Name, the Nose a man of the world consults a fashionable Parisian parfumerie in search of a scent worn by a mysterious masked lady, while in London a drugged rock musician ruts like an animal in heat for the female whose odor lures him into crazed pursuit. And so the senses, promising the fulfillment of desire and an exit from the self, only lead back to their source: the savor- ing palate, the listening ear, the smelling nose. Three senses - three brilliant adventures into the art of narration by the Italian master. Italo Calvino (1923-1985) was one Italys greatest and most popular writers. His superb storytelling gifts earned him worldwide renown. inventory #10800 ISBN: 0151928207., Santa Fe, New Mesico: Museum of New Mexico - International Folk Art Foundation, 1966. 46 Un-numbered pages. Brown illustrated stiff covers with stapled binding., Interior text and drawings are flawless. Very light cover crease at bottom of cover. There are 41 New Mexico santos included with full page black and white drawings. The two different drawings of The Franciscan Shield are on the title and final pages. The full-page drawing with captions are alphabetical beginning with St. Acacius and ending with St. Rosalie of Palermo. The Spanish and English names are included. The aim of these drawings is to help collectors and students recognize the most popular and often-found subjects among New Mexico santos. The drawings by Frances Breese have been labors of love and are faithful in detail as well as in spirit to the originals. Examples shown were chosen from many comparable ones because they are typical of their kind, in good condition and especially charming. However, statues which have been broken, plaster patched and overpainted, and which have lost their attributes, or had wrong ones added to them, cannot often be correctly identified. Santos of New Mexico have in the past been misnamed by persons unfamiliar with either standard Christian iconography or that of Spain and Mexico. Once in print misnomers persist and add to general confusion. New Mexicans addressed themselves to Franciscan saints, as a rule, but there are always exceptions to every rule, which explains the presence of saints preferred by other Orders. We must also remember that a folk artist might present a familiar image in untraditional dress, color or unexpected attribute. However, when a New Mexico santo is found that is not included in these drawings it may safely be classed as uncommon if not unique. The examples reproduced here are from the collections of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, the Taylor Museum in Colorado Springs and Bobby Berg, Charles D. Carroll, Norma Fiske Day and Mr. and Mrs. Alan C. Vedder; all others are from the collections of the Museum of New Mexico. . First Edition First Printing. Trade Paperback. Near Fine.
