Bound in half red calf with corners, back thinned on four bands set with gilded garlands decorated with double gilded coffered agréme, tees golden typographical reasons, morocco as Exhibit green fir, coaching double gilt fillets on marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, gilded head. Philibert, comte de Gramont (1621 1707) was a French nobleman. Anthony Hamilton (1646 1720) was an Irish classical author who wrote in French. The Mmoires du comte de Gramont made Hamilton one of the classical writers of France. Condition: Rebound in half leather with marbled boards. Externally, excellent with just some minor shelfwear to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Generally clean with just a few scattered spots. Some slight chipping to the fore-edge of several pages. Illustrated by Sixty-four engraved portraits, some in 'Proof' state. We should note that this particular edition was probably issued with these plates and, though it is very scarce in this format, it really should not be called 'extra illustrated' as it is at times. 8vo. 23 cm. Lovely full morocco leather bindings by Birdsall, tooled in gold gilt. Red silk endpapers. Joints weak. Translated into English by Abel Boyer (1667-1729); Revised and edited by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). This edition is quite scarce. Philibert, comte de Gramont (1621-1707) was a courtier at the court of French King Louis XIV. He fought with distinction in the early campaigns of the Prince de Conde and at first followed Conde in the Fronde, but in 1654 he made his peace with the court, of which he was thereafter a chief member. Exiled (1662) for having attempted to rival Louis in a love affair, he went (1663) to the court of King Charles II of England. A prominent figure there, he married Elizabeth Hamilton, with whom he returned to France in 1664. It was to her brother, Anthony Hamilton, that the aged courtier gave the anecdotal material Hamilton used in writing Gramont's memoirs. The memoirs, although they reveal Gramont as a witty and insolent cad, are an invaluable source for the social history of his period. The spelling Grammont, always used in the title of the memoirs, is an old error - Columbia Encyclopedia. This set would make a great gift. SW2 **PRICE JUST REDUCED!. Full-Leather Hardcover.
