Des del segle XIX la posició econ.mica i social dels propietaris rurals ha patit una intensa reculada. Paral·lelament al retrocés del pes del sector agrari, la que havia estat classe dirigent ha perdut progressivament la seva preeminència i ha vist qüestionada la seva legitimitat social. Naturalment, aquest procés no ha estat exempt de tensions. A Catalunya, el període que s'obre amb la crisi agrària de finals del segle XIX i es clou amb la Guerra Civil n'és un exemple.
