Written by Baron Fouqué, Friedrich de la Motte, one of the genus, but lesser-known authors of German Romanticism, Sintram and His Companions is a collection of four stories, four powerful narratives, each of them associated to one of the four seasons ? the tale of Sintram is grave and sinister the way only winter can be, Undine is playful, moving and refreshing, like Spring, Two Captains takes the reader to the hottest corners of the world, while Aslauga?s Knight evokes the colors of fall. The stories that make up the book feature motifs and topics typical to Romanticism: the reader encounters knights in shining armor, damsels in distress, evil spells and the eternal struggle between good and evil.Out of the four tales, the story that made Fouqué?s really well-known and popular in his time was the one associated to spring, Undine. First published individually in 1811, the novella is a fairy tale inspired from French folk literature and occultist literature, most notably the works of Paracelsus. The story is about a water spirit who marries a knight in order to get a soul of her own ? a plot that is charmingly elaborated by Fouqué and one that has inspired numerous later writers, composers and painters including E.T.A. Hoffmann, Andy Warhol, Neil Jordan Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Gaugin and Turner. The other stories in the collection are not less impressive ? they are all adventurous, eventful, full of larger-than-life characters and always ending with the prevalence of good over evil and with the triumph of love.Fouqué?s fascination with medieval stories and mythology inspired the author to versify various medieval romances and to dramatize the Nibelung legend in three plays published together in 1810. The dramatizations raised public attention to Fouqué?s works and they also served as inspiration for The Ring of the Nibelung, Richard Wagner?s epic music dramas., 0, MP3 Audio CD. Heinrich Hoffmann was a popular psychiatrist who wrote many scientific papers as well as a few short stories for children. His book Struwwelpeter: Merry Tales and Funny Pictures contains 10 stories which deal with misbehaved boys and the consequences of their actions. Published in 1845 under the name ?Funny Stories and Whimsical Pictures with 15 Beautifully Coloured Panels for Children Aged 3 to 6? , the collection of stories was actually a result of the author being unable to find a good children?s book for the birthday of his 3 year old son. He subsequently decided to write his own book. He not only wrote 10 delightful stories, but also did the drawings and illustrations on his own. Many contemporaries have praised his directness as well as his innovative style. The title Struwwelpeter actually translates to Shockheaded Peter. It is also the title of one of the stories, in which a boy named Peter refuses to comb his hair properly. He is thus unpopular and goes through a lot of trouble because of his neglected hair. Other notable stories include the one with the boy who, after terrorizing animals and humans alike, is eventually bitten by a dog who also eats the sausage he boy drops. Another story focuses on three boys who poke on a dark skinned fellow. Saint Nicholas catches the mischief three and puts them into a huge inkstand in order to teach them a lesson. All stories have exaggerated consequences for misbehaving, and they do make a point. If some of the stories aren?t exactly happy ending, they do teach valuable lessons such as the reasons why children shouldn?t play with matches. Struwwelpeter: Merry Tales and Funny Pictures is a must read for young children, as well as for parents willing to educate the young and themselves., 0, MP3 Audio CD. Nutcracker and Mouse King During the long, long day of the twenty-fourth of December, the children of Doctor Stahlbaum were not permitted to enter the parlor, much less the adjoining drawing-room. Frederic and Maria sat nestled together in a corner of the back chamber; dusky twilight had come on, and they felt quite gloomy and fearful, for, as was commonly the case on this day, no light was brought in to them. Fred, in great secrecy, and in a whisper, informed his little sister (Marie was only just seven years old), that ever since morning be had heard a rustling and a rattling, and now and then a gentle knocking, in the forbidden chambers. Not long ago also he had seen a little dark man, with a large chest under his arm, gliding softly through the entry, but he knew very well that it was nobody but Godfather Drosselmeier. Upon this Maria clapped her little hands together for joy, and exclaimed, "Ah, what beautiful things has Godfather Drosselmeier made for us this time!" Counsellor Drosselmeier was not a very handsome man; he was small and thin, had many wrinkles in his face, over his right eye he had a large black patch, and he was without hair, for which reason he wore a very nice white wig; this was made of glass however, and was a very ingenious piece of work. The Godfather himself was very ingenious also, he understood all about clocks and watches, and could even make them. Accordingly, when any one of the beautiful clocks in Doctor Stahlbaum's house was sick, and could not sing, Godfather Drosselmeier would have to attend it. He would then take off his glass wig, pull off his brown coat, put on a blue apron, and pierce the clock with sharp-pointed instruments, which usually caused little Maria a great deal of anxiety. But it did the clock no harm ; on the contrary, it became quite lively again, and began at once right merrily to rattle, and to strike, and to sing, so that it was a pleasure to all who heard it. We often look to the theater for spectacle and wonder, but in opera, we find pure enchantment. What is it about the marriage of music and the stage that fills us with such bewilderment and passion? How does the sensual space of opera transport us into the realm of dream? Jean Starobinski considers the allure of several seducers and seductresses from nineteenth-century opera-Monteverdi's Poppea, Handel's Alcina, and Massenet's Manon, among others-and how their stories are woven into the fabric of Western culture. A talented storyteller and renowned critic of literature and music, Starobinski moves from musical analysis and textual exegesis to an investigation of the political, social, and aesthetic scene of Europe at the time. He traces the elements of theater, poetry, painting, sculpture, dance, and music as they occur in operatic performance, and shows how opera's use of narrative genres, especially the fairy tale, in turn influenced many important short stories, novels, and other works. Nineteenth-century romantics were drawn to opera because of their desire to revive a religious vision of the world that the Enlightenment suppressed. Starobinski revisits the experiences of Rousseau, Stendhal, Hoffmann, Balzac, and Nietzsche, major writers who fell for opera's portrayal of "heaven," the loss of one's love, and the task of the artist, whether composer or performer. Starobinski's critical breadth and depth, as well as his eclectic taste and keen observation, echo such great comparative critics as Erich Auerbach, René Wellek, George Steiner, Harold Bloom, and Angus Fletcher. This spellbinding book will enchant not only fans of the opera, but also those who wish to understand the form's enduring heritage in Western culture., Columbia University Press, 2008, 4, Institute for the Arts, Rice University, 1971 2021-05-29. An attractive tight and unmarked copy- Burgundy leather look with guild-Gift/Collectible quality- John Collier's edgy, sardonic tales are works of rare wit, curious insight, and scary implication. Hoffmann and Charles Dickens as well as more recent masters like Jorge Luis Borges and Roald Dahl. With a cast of characters that ranges from man-eating flora to disgruntled devils and suburban salarymen (not that it's always easy to tell one from another), Collier's dazzling stories explore the implacable logic of lunacy, revealing a surreal landscape whose unstable surface is depth-charged with surprise., Time-Life Books, 1980, 5, Hamburg Hoffmann und Campe, 1986. Cohen, Alexander Rabinowitch, and Robert Sharlet After Stalin's death in 1953, a period of reform was initiated in the Soviet Union, but conservative retrenchment has largely prevailed with the Brezhnev regime. The Soviet Union since Stalin presents interpretive essays by leading scholars who address the theme of continuity and change in Soviet politics, economics, society, culture, and foreign policy over the past twenty-five years. Among the topics covered are the tension between conservatism and reform, the performance of industry and agriculture, the mood of the Soviet "middle class," recent trends in litera-ture, the situation of the Soviet family, the Stalinist legacy in Soviet foreign policy, and the rise of a new nationalism among ethnic minorities. Written with both the specialist and the general reader in mind, this volume brings to bear solid new research on the post-Stalin era. Contributors George W. Breslauer John Bushnell Stephen F. Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg, Germany, I was asked to give a reading of MY CHEKHOV LIGHT there. The late WVU German professor Jurgen Schlunk translated the play into German and, while I read/performed the piece in English, those in the 200-year-old E.T. A. Hoffmann Theater audience, who could not understand English, followed the text in German. As a result of that reading/performance, the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theatre produced the play, in German, in their Studio Theater in late November, 1999. Also as a result of my Bamberg reading/ performance, I accepted a rewrite suggestion from the Artistic Director Rainer Lewandowski. Based on his suggestion, I did a major rewrite on the play., Frankischer Tag, 1995, 4, Indiana Univ Pr, 1980. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. 342 pages with an index. Álter ego ofrece un panorama bastante completo y variado sobre el tema, e incluye textos (en orden cronológico) de los románticos alemanes E. T. A. Hoffmann y Achim von Arnim, los norteamericanos Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James y Ambrose Bierce, los franceses Théophile Gautier, Guy de Maupassant y Marcel Schwob, los británicos R. L. They stand out as one of the pinnacles in the critically neglected but perennially popular tradition of weird writing that includes E.T.A.
