Longman, Green, and Co.,, 1872.. 1872 xiii, [3], 600 p. Eight plates. First edition. Contemporary calf prize binding of Owens College, Manchester. Boards panelled in gold and blind with an armorial block on the front board and a prize label dated 1875 - 6 on the front pastedown. Spine with raised bands and a contrasting label. Minor rubbing to edges and corners. A very good copy. Robert Smith (1817 1884) was born in Glasgow. He studied chemistry at Giessen under Liebig and received his PhD in 1841. He became assistant to Playfair at the Manchester Royal Institution in 1843 and helped him with his report on sanitary conditions in Lancashire. He carried out work for the Royal Commissions on the Sanitation of the Metropolis in 1848, on Mines (1864), on Cattle Plague (1865) and for the Local Government Board in 1879. He became Inspector to the Alkali Inspectorate on its creation in 1863, a post he held for the rest of his life. He was the first researcher to recognise the phenomonen and coin the term 'acid rain'. The importance of much of his work on industrial atmospheric pollution has only been recognised towards the end of the twentieth century. 'His most important work is in Disinfectants and Disinfection (1869), in which he recognizes the quite different chemical effects of the variety of substances proposed as disinfectants, antiseptics, or deodorizers, and Air and Rain: the Beginnings of a Chemical Climatology (1872), which presents the vast body of data Smith had accumulated on the composition of urban atmospheres.' ODNB. See also GORHAM, E. Robert Angus F. R. S. and 'Chemical Climatology' Notes and Records of the Royal Society of London: 267 272., Longman, Green, and Co., 1872., 0<
